a technique of corrective muscle exercises involving pressure on fingers and joints to relieve pain or spasms.

A neuromuscular massage A deep massage in which fingers are used to knead individual muscles, increase blood flow and release “trigger points”. Neuromuscular massage is applied to neural reflex and trigger points, like those of shiatsu and acupressure, to enhance neuromuscular interaction; it may be used to control pain and reduce neuromuscular spasms.

In NM, the term trigger point refers to a circumscribed “knot” of tense muscle which, when stimulated, evokes a pain response elsewhere in the body; this contrasts with the term trigger point or trigger zone as used by neurologists, which refers to a region on mucocutaneous surfaces that, when stimulated, evokes intense locoregional pain (as occurs in trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, tic doloreaux and myofascial pain syndrome).
