Learn Skills and Practices for Healing, Wellness and Everyday Living!
The Director of the Institute, Susan Bass, experienced such extraordinary life-saving and life-changing healing through the practice of Ayurvedic Yoga that in 2003 she left her career at The Wall St. Journal to immerse herself in the study of Ayurveda & Yoga. Susan explained, ‘I had searched so long for a way to heal that when I found it all I wanted to do was share these practical, wise ways of living with others’.

The principles and practices of Ayurveda and Yoga are from the ancient Vedic Texts. These sacred arts are most effective when practiced together. Ayurvedic Yoga personalizes the yogic practice for each individual based on his or her constitutional type and current state of being. This program is designed to teach you to use pulse and tongue reading, yoga, breath-work, diet, spices, meditation, mantras, mudras, chakra and marma balancing, as well as daily living routines to restore balance and harmony in the body, mind and spirit.

In the program Susan teaches, “Think of yourself as your first client, this is 300 hours of you healing yourself with the ancient sacred arts of Ayurveda & Yoga.”
Our school is certified by Yoga Alliance, National Ayurvedic Medical Association and Association of Ayurvedic Practitioners of North America.
Our next 300-Hour certification program begins in March 25, 2016

“You have one real duty in life… to save your dream” ~Modigliani

I’m Susan Bass, Detox and Digestion Specialist in Portland, Oregon. I work with individuals who want customized solutions for healing themselves naturally. Drawing on my Ayurvedic training and my personal experience of healing myself naturally, I help people sharpen their own internal listening skills so they can give their body what it needs to be its best.

We’re told early in life that we each have a purpose. To me someone’s purpose is their soul’s deepest desire, their gift to share with the world. For some, discovering what that is might happen with ease. For most of us, the dream reveals itself slowly if we can first create the environment for it to flower. That’s why I do this work today.

The dream of who I could be and what that could look like was revealed to me a little at a time through the practice of Yoga and Ayurveda. These teachings created fertile ground for my dreams to break through the darkness, and to see the light of day.

As a child, I grew up on soy baby formula, vaccines, antibiotics, allergy shots and processed food. My life was a constant stream of allergic reactions, ear infections and stomach aches. My digestion had been seriously impaired by the toxins in these modern day “conveniences” and “remedies.”

There were so many of us like this in the South where I was raised, it was considered normal. But, I knew it was not normal. My skin was red and irritated, my stomach was torn up, and my nerves were frayed. I felt allergic to the world around me; felt like a canary in the coalmine. I was incapable of having the energy to do anything, let alone act on a dream that lived inside my soul. What dream? I only wanted to end my suffering.

In 1999, I did my first Ayurvedic cleanse. For 12 days, I gave my body soothing foods based on my body type and the season. I also incorporated time tested daily practices from this ancient system for the purpose of creating health. I breathed deeply and soaked up nature. I relaxed and gave my trust to the wisdom of the oldest continuously practiced health care system in the world, Ayurveda. For the first time ever, my body came alive. I saw life with a new pair eyes.

Next thing I knew, I was fearlessly leaving my position at The Wall Street Journal to study Yoga and to become an Ayurvedic Practitioner. Ayurveda had given me hope, inspiration and awakened me to my dream, my dream to be part of a process that nurtures others in transforming their entire existence.

I had searched so long for a way to heal my body, mind and soul and I had finally found it. All I wanted was to share it with others… I HAD to!

I studied at The Kripalu School of Ayurveda, The Ayurvedic Institute and The Institute of Digestive Health, as well as, worked as the Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist in a Panchakarma clinic to complete over three thousand hours of study in Ayurveda, Yoga and Herbalism. Since then, I’ve led hundreds of motivated souls to explore what it feels like to have a body/mind/soul that isn’t raging war against itself.
Ayurveda is a time tested science that helps us heal ourselves by reconnecting with nature, inside and out. It peels off layers of trauma, removes doubt and builds our stamina when we need it most. Those are just a few emotional benefits… the physical rewards are amazing–vibrant hair, glowing skin, heightened senses, weight loss, less pain, etc. Ayurveda and Yoga are ancient, sacred healing paths that help people connect to their internal source of power.

In the last 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of spreading this knowledge in several different ways:

• Fall and Spring group cleanses
• Individualized consultation with clients
• Pubic presentations about digestion, detoxification and self-care
• Published articles in online health resources
• Cooking demonstrations
• Activism for chemical-free foods, clean environment & animal rights

Although I don’t struggle like before, I vividly recall what it’s like to feel sad, anxious and uncomfortable. My dream is to be here now, to share the wisdom, light and compassion of these ancient arts with those who are drawn to this healing path.

The Italian artist, Modigliani said, “You have one real duty in life… to save your dream.”
